Fun facts about The Texas State Fair Icon:

• Originally a giant Santa Clause in Kerens, Texas, R.L. Thornton purchased him in 1951 for $750 and refurbished him for the fair as Big Tex.

• He’s had a nose job and a procedure to correct an odd wink.

• After he caught fire, he grew a few feet taller. He stands at 55’ high and weighs over 19,000 lbs.

• He has aged since he was first introduced. On his 50th birthday, he gained a few new wrinkles and a few grey hairs.

• His “ten gallon hat” would fit 95 gallons.
