• He was an award winning author. He wrote about 20 books over the course of his life, the first of which detailed his army experiences in India.

• Both Winston Churchill and King George VI had wanted to accompany the Allied Expeditionary Force on D-Day but was dissuaded by an Admiral who would not take responsibility for them.

• He created some 500 artworks. Only 50 had been exhibited by the time he died.

• He led Britain to victory in the Second World War.

• His mother was an American.
